Canine Influenza Virus is here!!

The Rutland Veterinary Clinic and Surgical Center has been seeing a number of coughing dogs recently. Based on test results these dogs have been diagnosed with an influenza virus, which before now, had not been seen in this area. This virus is thought to be a mutated horse influenza virus which started out in greyhounds several years ago. Since then hot spots of infection have showed up in over 30 states in the United States.

Dogs presenting with this disease typically have a dry hacking type cough which can last up to 21 days. Dogs typically show signs 2-4 days after coming in contact with the virus. These dogs can also have runny eyes and/or a runny nose. In some cases some dogs can become very sick developing fevers and pneumonia.

Treatment is aimed at controlling the symptoms. Dogs are placed on antibiotics to prevent secondary infections and cough suppressants. Most dogs recover within 21 days from the point of infection.

Vaccination is available, and although it does not prevent disease, it will lessen the severity and duration of the disease. All dogs being boarded, going to day care, going to puppy classes or going to dog shows should be vaccinated.

If you suspect your dog has been exposed, or is showing symptoms, please contact Rutland County Veterinary Clinic and Surgical Center as soon as possible.
